Walter Tiedeman was the son of German immigrants Theodore and Hannah Tiedeman, who came to the U.S. in 1855 and eventually settled on North Street and Second Avenue in Ballard around 1891. Tiedeman graduated from the School of Mines at the University of Washington in 1901 with a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering; that same year he ran on the Democratic ticket for City Treasurer in Ballard.
